KOSGODA TURTLE  HATCHERY

The Turtle Care Centre at Kosgoda beach is one of 18 turtle hatcheries along the southern coast of Sri Lanka. The centre is located in the South Western coastal village of Kosgoda and was establised in 1981. It is also very popular as all five species of turtles that visit Sri Lanka nest in Kosgoda. This is not so with many of the other hatcheries around the island whose beaches host only some of the species.

SPICE GARDENS IN SRI LANKA

Sri Lanka has always been reknowned for its spices. Over 15 different spices call Sri Lanka home and many of them are traded in the international spice market. Cinnamon especially is endemic to Sri Lanka, and highest quality ‘true cinnamon’ can be obtained here. However if a visitor does not know the right places to purchase spices it is very easy to be duped for low quality spices or pay unnecessarily exorbitant prices. Visiting Sri Lanka which is a land of spices, without seeing those spices being grown would indeed be a pity too. HUMMANAYA BLOW HOLE

Whilst there are many blowholes all over the world, and especially along the European coast; Sri Lanka only has one known blowhole. It’s near Kudawella, a small fishing village in the Southern Province. Hummanaya can be reached by crossing over a tombolo; a piece of land that is created when deposition of sand or gravel occurs, connecting an island to the mainland. This blowhole has achieved fame amongst visitors to the island, as it is believed to the second largest blowhole around the world. Named after the strong humming sound that it produces while active; Hummanaya Blowhole can shoot up to a height between 25 – 30m.

ZOOLOGICAL GARDEN IN SRILANKA

Zoological Garden in Sri Lanka is situated in 11 km from the Fort – Colombo, the zoo has a fine collection of animals, birds, reptiles and fish from all over the world. The aquarium is the only one of its kind in Asia and displays over 500 varieties of aquatic life. Also walk through Aviary, Reptilian, and Butterfly Park to see another amazing world of wild animals. There are daily elephant performance at 5.15 p.m. Open daily between 8.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m.

MUTHURAJAWELA WET LAND

Muthurajawela is the largest saline coastal peat bog in Sri Lanka. The Marsh together with the Negombo Lagoon form an integrated coastal wetland eco-system with marsh lagoon complex itself estimated to have originated around the year 5000.
The marsh is a major local and tourist attraction, primarily used for sightseeing and boating tours, and the area also supports local agriculture and forestry. Visitors to the region are guided through the sanctuary areas by the staff of the Muthurajawela Marsh Centre to avoid serious harm to the marsh ecosystem.

PINNAWALA ELEPHANT ORPHANEGE

The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is situated northwest of the town of Kegalle, halfway between the present capital Colombo and the ancient royal residence Kandy. It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Wildlife Department in a 25 acre coconut property adjoining the Maha Oya River. The orphanage was originally founded in order to afford care and protection to the many orphaned Elephants found in the jungles of Sri Lanka.

MOON PLAINS

Covered in a verdant carpet of healthy grass; the Moon Plains are home to many wildlife elk, wild buffaloes, dear, the occasional leopard and many types of birds. However, the main point of interest is the viewpoint of the ‘Mini World’s End’. A location on the apex of a sharply dropping cliff, that gives a 360º view of the surrounding landscape.

MACKWOODS LABOOKELLIE TEA FACTORY

The Mackwoods Labookellie Tea Centre is located in the heights of Nuwara Eliya, over 2000m above sea level, in some of the tea plantation areas in Sri Lanka. It was the first tea factory in Sri Lanka to be awarded ISO 9001:2000 Certification from SGS, UK; and is a modern facility that greatly benefits from the techniques adapted by the Research and Development team of Mackwoods. As such visitors to the Labookellie Tea Centre get a chance to see and experienced the best of quality and newest devolopments of the Mackwoods Tea Centre  

MEEMURE

Pack-bulls used to be the solitary method of transport to Meemure until 2004. Herds of cattle carried sacks full of goods and equipment to the village. Due to the fertility and prosperity of the village; the pack-bulls were only used to carry salt, cloths, tobacco and calcium bicarbonate. But with the invasion of modern technology, the trails have been widened to allow three wheelers, jeeps and small trucks.

SHANTHIPURA VILLAGE

Shanthipura is the highest village in North East of Sri Lanka and accessible from the Nuwara Eliya Kandy road. Located at the bottom of a hill, this little village gives a panoramic view of the distant blue hills and the lake next to the valley, gradually again going up a slope with the green tea bushes..

KANNIYA HOT  SPRINGS

Kanniya Hot Springs is famous hot well in Sri Lanka from the past. There are seven wells in a square shape. Wells are only 3–4 feet deep and you can clearly see the bottom. The temperature is considerably high but vary from one spring to another. Wells run out of water, when 10-15 buckets of water are taken out. 

HADUNGODA TEA ESTATE

Among the foothills of Ahangama rises the famous Virgin White Tea Factory, Handunugoda. Surrounded by an evergreen forest in the Southern Province, Handunugoda Tea Estate is the only estate and factory in the coastal belt of Sri Lanka. They have much renown as the artisanal producers of luxury teas. In addition to the Signature Virgin White, the factory is also known for other award-winning teas such as Ceylon Souchong, Sapphire Oolong, and Flowery Cammellia. The teas are exclusively created and handmade by the sole proprieter Herman Gunaratne; using tried and tested orthodox methods to produce exquisite whole-leaf teas that can be brewed several times. .
